Eugene, 80, of Okemos, died Friday. He was the son of James Earl and Bernice (McClave) Huddleston.

He was a resident of Okemos since 1966. Eugene was a loving husband and father. He grew up in Russell, KY; graduated from Russell High School in 1949, and after attending Ashland Junior College, graduated from Marshall College in 1953. Following an M.A. from Ohio University in 1956 and graduate work at Indiana University, he obtained the Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1965. Winner of the Norman Foerster Prize in 1966, he pursued a career in the Dept. of American Thought and Language until retirement in 1992.

He married Mary Lou in 1961 in Plymouth, MI and would be celebrating 50 years of marriage in June.

He is survived by his wife and son John, a graduate of Michigan State living in Arlington, VA. Other survivors include his brother, Gary (Bobby), sister-in-law Margaret (Fred) Pomeroy and several nieces and nephews.

Gene was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Okemos, and has pursued a lifetime interest in railroad history and photography, along with scholarship in early American literature. He is author or co-author of over 50 articles and eleven books. He was listed in Who's Who in America starting in 1982. The 2011 edition had his recent book "Chesapeake and Ohio Facilities In Color Vol. 2: Corridors.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 28, at The Presbyterian Church of Okemos, Okemos.
