Leo Burt VanEvery, 89, of Modesto, Calif., formerly of Rupert, passed away Monday, April 18, 2011, in Modesto, Calif.
Leo was born Sept. 21, 1921, to Burt and Pearl VanEvery in Rupert, Idaho. He attended elementary schools in Rupert and Pioneer, a country school northwest of Rupert. He attended and graduated from Rupert High School in 1939. He then attended the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture, with majors in agricultural education and dairy husbandry, in 1943. He enlisted in the Military Reserve Corps in September 1943, and entered the U.S. Army in March 1944, serving until January 1945. His overseas service was in the European Theater of Operation (ETO), and he was decorated with the Bronze Star Medal in Germany. Leo was proud to have marched in the official Victory Parade up Seventh Avenue in New York City with the 82nd Airborne Division just before his discharge at Fort Monmouth, N.J., in 1946.
Leo married Elizabeth (Betty) Sullivan on Aug. 19, 1944, in Newark, N.J. After his discharge, Leo and Betty traveled across the country by car to Rupert, Idaho. That was in early spring of 1946. They moved to a farm northwest of Rupert and lived there until the summer of 1976, when they moved to Ruby Drive in Rupert. In addition to farming part time, Leo was employed by the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service (USDA) and it's predecessor agencies (ACA, PMA) from 1947 until 1978. Leo's wife, Betty, died in 1983 after a long illness. Leo married Marge Throckmorton in 1984, and they lived in Rupert. Marge died after a heart attack in 1994. Then Leo married Delores (Dodie) Friesen in 1995. They continued to live in Rupert until her death in 1998. Leo married LeOla Wall in 2000. They lived in Rupert until her death in 2005. He then married Bonnie McCool and was later divorced. He remained in his home until moving to Autumn Haven Assisted Living. He moved to Bethel Assisted Living in Modesto, Calif., in July 2010 in order to be near his daughter and her family. He remained in Modesto until his death.
Leo was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and traveling.
Leo is survived by his children, Edward (Andrea) VanEvery and Mary (Vince) Ebersole; grandchildren, Sonya Van Every, Lisa (Greg) Perkins and Joshua (Pips) Ebersole; great-grandchildren, Zack, Luke, Finn, Elizabeth and Zachary; great-great-grandchildren, Eisham, Mashante and Carvyn; brothers, Loy, Bill and Ernie; and numerous children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren related by marriage, united by love. He was preceded in death by his parents, Burt and Pearl VanEvery; brothers, Novel and Glen VanEvery; spouses, Elizabeth, Margaret, Delores and LeOla; and great-great grandchild, Isaiah.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Rupert Cemetery, with military rites by the Mini-Cassia Veterans. A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1250 21st St. in Heyburn, with Jerry Lankford and Greg Perkins officiating. Viewing for family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 22, at Hansen Mortuary, 710 Sixth St. in Rupert.
