He was the son of Matthew and Rebecca Gower.

Private, Companies K, B & C, 7th Tennessee Cavalry, enlisted for 3 years at Saulsbury, TN on 10/19/1863 and mustered at Saulsbury on 10/26/63. He was 5'10" tall, light complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair, a farmer. He furnished his own horse and equipment and was due a $100 bounty for enlistment. Though he enlisted in Co K, at some point he changed to Co B, and then transferred to Co C by August 1864. He was discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/1865. He applied for an invalid pension in the 1880s. On 10/26/1889 he joined the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Post #81 in Lexington, TN. (information from #46918562)
