Melchert Z. Stannard,the son of Edward Mather Stannard and Mary Jane Helmer, was born on a farm and lost his father at age six. According to the book Men of Progress of Indiana, at age sixteen he began teaching school,earning during the winter months enough money to attend school during the remainder of the year. At the age of twenty he began the study of law with Messrs. Howard & Read, a well-established law firm in Jeffersonville. While pursuing his studies he attended Law School at the University of Louisville, from which he graduated in 1879. In March, 1879, he was admitted as a member of the firm with which he had read law, the firm thereafter known as Howard, Read & Stannard. He went on to marry Flora C. Read, the daughter of his law partner, John F. Read, in 1885. He was a charter member of the Indiana State Bar Association which was organized in 1896. He built the family home at 304 East Market Street in Jeffersonville. They had a son who died in infancy and a daughter, Lida Stannard.
