Elwood W. Smith, 87, 1791 E. Smith Court, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1987, at the Midland Hospital Center.

He was born Aug. 14, 1900, IN Midland County, where he attended schools. He was veteran of World War I, serving in the U.S. Army's Fourth Trench Mortar Battalion, 85th Division, stationed in France.

He married the former Goldie Sweebe, Dec. 22, 1934, in Midland; she died Dec. 1982, He worked for the Dow Chemical Co. for 47 years as a general foreman in the Stock & Receiving Department, retiring in 1963.

He was past commander of midland V.F.W. Post No. 3651 and of V.F.W. District 11. He served for 28 years as officer of the day for the V.F.W. Ritual Team and was the first president of United Mine Workers Union Local No. 12075.

He was quartermaster-adjutant for Barracks No. 326, and a member of the Military Order of the Cooties and of Midland American Legion Berryhill Post No. 165. He also enjoyed growing flowers

He leaves sons Burton Smith of Lakeland, Fla., Rear Admiral Vernon Smith of Okinawa, Japan, Kenneth Smith of Bay City and James Smith, Lyle Smith, Donald Bloomfield, and Duane Bloomfield, all of Midland; daughters, Violet Barwell of Hudson, Fla., and Gladys Woodcock, Frances Longsdorf and Ruth O'Connor, all of Midland; 39 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was predeceased in death by a son, Robert Bloomfield, in 1983; and by two sisters, two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Ware-Smith-Woolever & Co. Funeral Home, with Rev. Manley Brokaw of the Faith Christian Outreach Center officiating. Burial will be in Homer Township Cemetery, with military services conducted under the auspices of Midland V.F.W. Post No. 3615.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until time of services.

The family will be present at the funeral home this evening and from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorial are suggested to the donor's favorite charity.
