He was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Surgoinsville serving as deacon and post treasurer to the local mission fund. He was a well-known baseball player in the area, even playing on the Army Air Corps baseball team in Pearl Harbor. He was with the Army Air Corps during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
He was a member of the American Legion Joseph Rogers Post No. 21, and also a member of VFW Post No. 9754, Church Hill. He retired from Mead Corporation.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther Bailey and Pearl Dykes Bailey; grandmother, who raised him, Sarah Bailey; sister-in-law, Frances Roo and brother-in-law, Kenneth Rakestraw.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Hilda Rakestraw Bailey of the home; son Harry Lee Bailey, Jr. and wife, Ellen, Parker, AZ; brothers-in-law, Billy Rakestraw and Reece Rakestraw; sisters-in-law, Betty Lewis, Georgia Ball and Opal Smith and husband, the Rev. Lyons Smith; very special niece, Glenda Ball, Kingsport and several other nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted Wednesday, March 17, 2004 in the Carter-Trent Funeral Home chapel, Church Hill with Rev. Lyons Smith and Pastor Brad Smith officiating. Military graveside services were conducted Thursday, March, 18, 2004 at Hawkins County Memorial Gardens with Rev. Otto Giles officiating. Pallbearers were family and friends. Honorary pallbearers were past and present deacons of First Baptist Church, Surgoinsville.
