Mary Ethel Ervine was born on September 20, 1903 in Virginia to Lanty Filmore Ervine and his wife Julia (called "Julien" in a few census records). She was their second child and only daughter, her other siblings being William Roscoe (1901-1935), Harry Nelson (1906-1985), and Lanty A. (1907-1974). She went by Ethel for most of her life, and was called "Mom" by her many grandchildren.

The family later moved to Pocahontas County, West Virginia, where she met my great-grandfather, Henry O'Dell Blackhurst (1895-1989). The two were married on October 6, 1920 in Cass, West Virginia, and together became the parents of four children. Their second son Donald Lee Blackhurst, Sr. (1928-1984) was my grandfather.

Bop and Ethel enjoyed a long and happy marriage, and good health up until the early 1980's when they were diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. A few years after they were moved into a nursing home, Ethel went to be with the Lord in on March 2, 1988 after nearly 68 years of wedded bliss. Her husband joined her the following year. Although I never met Mom and Bop Blackhurst, their legacies live on through the countless recipes Mom passed down, and the beautifully crafted wooden furniture that Bop made.
