Bud married Bev Schmidt in Lexington.
Survivors include his wife; son, Jim Gierhan and his wife, Rhonda, of Clay Center, Kan.; daughter-in-law, Susan Gierhan of Kearney; brother, Sam Gierhan and his wife, Dixie, of Lakewood, Calif.; sister, Sue Bredenkamp and her husband, Roger, of Long Beach, Calif., and Darline Bourn of Bismarck, N.D.; grandchildren, Jonathan Gierhan and his wife, Sarah, and Jenny Gierhan, all of Kearney, and Adam Gierhan and Ryan Gierhan, both of Clay Center; mother-in-law, Doris Thompson of Franklin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bud grew up on a farm in the Buffalo area north of Lexington. He attended Lutheran parochial school in Buffalo. Bud joined the U.S. Army in 1951 and served during the Korean War.
While with the Army, he had the opportunity to play battalion baseball, which was one of his true passions. One of his favorite memories from battalion baseball was when he played against Ted Williams and he threw him out at third base. He also coached many Little League teams in Kearney and Lexington. Bud and Bev were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington.
In 1993, they moved to Kearney. In 1999, he retired from the Nebraska Department of Roads. He then worked part time for the Buffalo County Highway Department. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kearney. He was especially proud of his sons and all of his grandchildren. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, playing golf, watching baseball, dancing with Bev, gardening and being on his tractor.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Michael.
Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Franklin, NE.
