Dr. Lee Barton. Chapman, age 68, of Birmingham died on Sunday, January 6, 2008, having fought a brave battle with cancer.

Lee was the son of the late Dr. Charles Hickerson Chapman and Anne Barton Chapman of Andalusia. He graduated from Davidson College and UAB Medical School and did a general surgery residency at the University of Virginia and UAB.

Dr. Chapman served in both the Marine Corps and the US Navy as a surgeon on the USS Ticonderoga. After his military service he returned to Birmingham and practiced at Brookwood Medical Center as a general surgeon for over 30 years. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and past president of the Jefferson County Medical Society, and he pioneered the use of laproscopic surgery in the Birmingham area. At his retirement in 2000 an operating suite at Brookwood Hospital was named in honor of his dedication to his patients and his commitment to the Brookwood surgical community.

For the past 25 years, Lee and his wife Karen have volunteered with Medical Missions International, a Christian group that offers crucial and unavailable surgical procedures to those in need around the world. Lee was also a long time member of the Independent Presbyterian Church, a volunteer at M-Power Ministries as an adult literacy tutor and a member of several civic groups.

He is survived by his wife Karen, his two children Alison (husband - Gordon Black) and Edward, and by his four grandchildren (Kaimon and Lucian Chapman, Ian and Angus Black). A private family committal ceremony will be followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 9, 2008, at Independent Presbyterian Church. The family will greet friends at the church following the memorial service.

Pallbearers are Charles H. Chapman, III, William E. Dismukes, M. Bonner Engelhardt, William L. Hinds, Jr., Jeff Horsley, Warren B. Lightfoot, Charles L. Rutherford, and William Viar. Honorary Pallbearers are Richard E. Abernathy, Douglas S. Dickinson, William O. Fitzpatrick, James S. M. French, Robert E. Jones, Arthur E. Malone, Robert A. Schleusner, and Felix Yarboro. Instead of flowers, friends are asked to send donations to either Medical Missions International, P. O. Box 1339, Allen, TX 75013 Attn. Norma Clifton or to the Independent Presbyterian Church Mission Fund, 3100 Highland Avenue, Birmingham, AL 35205.
