OWATONNA -- Ross Horold Kunkel, 87, Owatonna, formerly of Fort Ripley and Brainerd, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at Owatonna Hospital.

He was born Jan. 31, 1915, in Page County, Iowa, to James and Maude (Godby) Kunkel. The family moved to Minnesota in 1919 and settled on a farm in Fort Ripley where they lived until 1950 when the National Guard purchased the farm. He worked in Washington for several years, playing baseball and working in the wheat fields and apple orchards. He was offered a chance to play ball with a farm team of the New York Yankees, which he declined. He married Ethel Lillian Schultz on June 1, 1939, in Fort Ripley. While living in Fort Ripley, he was self-employed operating a sawmill, maintaining roads, driving school bus and was elected township assessor. They moved to Brainerd in 1950. He was elected county commissioner in Crow Wing County, a position he held for 25 years, retiring in 1980. He served on several boards and committees such as chairman of the county board, chairman of the county welfare board, Region 5 development committee, highway advisory committee, lands and forestry committee, finance, Tri County Nutrition Center, Northern Pines Mental Health boards and many others. After retiring from his position as county commissioner, he was elected president of the Crow Wing County Fair Association, which he held until 1993 when he moved to Owatonna to be near his family. He owned and operated several pieces of road construction equipment. He and his operators built and maintained roads, plowed snow and cleared land. One of his larger projects was the construction of the Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fort Ripley for several years, serving as secretary/treasurer. After his marriage he joined Zion Lutheran Church of Brainerd where he served in various capacities during his 43 years as a member. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church since moving to Owatonna in 1993.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry Kunkel, Owatonna; a daughter, Beverly Collette, Owatonna; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A son, Robert, and two brothers, Paul and Ivan, died earlier.

Services will be 9:30 a.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Owatonna with the Rev. John Kallio officiating. Burial will be 4 p.m. Friday in Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd with a time of fellowship following at Zion Lutheran Church. Memorials are preferred to Owatonna Area Hospice or donor's choice.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Michaelson Funeral Home in Owatonna and an hour before services Friday at the church.
