Son of Revolutionary War soldier Henry McDaniel, Jr. and Hannah (Bryan) McDaniel, Caleb was born while the family lived in Monroe County, West Virginia formerly Greenbrier County, Virginia. In 1810, the family moved to Walnut Township in Gallia County, Ohio, where Caleb married Martha Williams on 14 September 1811. It was one of the earliest marriages in Gallia County.
Caleb and Martha moved to Symmes Township of Lawrence County, bordering on Gallia County. They made their home in Symmes Township at least as early 1820 and appear there in the census for that year as well as 1830, 1840, and 1850. Caleb was listed in the 1850 census as a farmer. Like many in his family, Caleb was also active in his church. In 1823, he named his second son William Kent McDaniel for a local Methodist minister of that day, Rev. William Kent. Thirty years later, Caleb saw that son accept the call to preach in the United Brethren Church. After the death of his wife, Caleb lived with their grandson Charles W. Jones back in Walnut Township. In the 1870 census, he was listed as an "infirm farmer". In 1871, he applied for and received a pension for his military service in the War of 1812. At some point, he went to live with his daughter and son-in-law John and Elizabeth McDaniel Jones. He passed away on 19 October 1974 at their home.
