info from DAR records
Info from Oscar:
Peleg's death was reported in the newspaper "The Spectator" (New York, NY), on Wednesday, 19 January 1803, p. 3, column 3 ("In New-Paltz, captain Peleg Ransom"). The will of Peleg Ransom of the Town of New Paltz in Ulster County is dated 16 June 1802, was proved on 1 February 1803, and admitted for probate on 18 February 1803.
Peleg's exact date of death is not known (in spite of many ancestry.com trees with undocumented dates and even the modern veteran's marker - 14 Apr 1802, for example, is not possible). He died between the date of his will (16 Jun 1802) and the date of his newspaper death notice (19 Jan 1803). A manuscript (undated but pre-1950) in the Historical Collection of the Elting Library in New Paltz says, "He died in the fall of 1802 – exact date not known, and is buried by the side of his father Joseph in the old Smith burying ground at Milton."
