Dr. Joseph J. Lindley, 81, a native of Chatham County, died at home Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003.Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at South Fork Friends Church Cemetery, 359 South Fork Bethel Road, Snow Camp. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Sid Huggins and the Rev. Dr. G. Robert McKenzie.

He was the son of the late Julius and Swanna Andrew Lindley. He is survived by his wife, Shirley P. Lindley and three children, Joseph J. Lindley, Jr., Graham, Dr. Ione Lindley Taylor, Reston, Va., Henry J. Lindley, Graham; his brother, Frank A. Lindley; daughter-in-law, Teresa Lamb Lindley; son-in-law, Carl A. Taylor, Jr.; and three grandchildren, Caroline L. Lindley, Carl A. Taylor, III and Lindley A. Taylor.
Dr. Lindley graduated from Guilford College with a BS degree in biology in 1941. During World War II, he graduated from the U.S. Navy midshipman School at Notre Dame and served four years in the South Pacific as a Lieutenant and Deck Officer in the Amphibious Force. After military service, he did graduate work at North Carolina State University. Dr. Lindley received a MD degree in 1951 from Medical College of Virginia and interned at James Walker Hospital, Wilmington. He went into general practice in Siler City from 1952 to 1957. After general practice, he returned to Medical College of Virginia, the McGuire Veterans Hospital, as a resident physician in general surgery for the Veterans Administration from 1957 to 1961. In 1962, Dr. Lindley returned to North Carolina, where he joined Kernodle Clinic in Burlington in partnership with H.B. and Charles Kernodle and practiced general surgery from 1962 until retirement in 1987. Dr. Lindley was a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He was co-founder of Lindley Mills, Inc. He was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church, Burlington.
Visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Rich and Thompson Mortuary, 306 Glenwood Ave., Burlington. Other times they will be at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, N.C. 27215 or Front Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 2597, Burlington, N.C. 27216.
