BACKUS - Kathleen Backus, 68, 5861 Garret Lane, died at 7:03 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 1981, in St. Anthony Hospital after a short illness. Born June 7, 1912, in Lancaster, Wis., daughter of Wendell and Amanda Backus. Lived 17 years in Rockford, coming here from Platteville, Wis. Employed as Rock Valley College librarian for 14 years, retiring in 1978. Before coming to Rockford, she was librarian at Platteville (Wis.) State University. During World War II, though a civilian, she was stationed in France with Army Special Services. Member of Spring Creek Congregational Church; also member of Rockford Chapter of National Affiliation of Library Advancement. Graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor's degree and received her master's degree from the University of Michigan. Survivors include a brother, J. Mortimer Backus, Milwaukee, Wis.; two sisters, Mrs. Annette Porter, Edgerton, Wis. and Mrs. Marjorie Ditzler, Roswell, N.M.; and nine nieces and nephews. Predeceased by a brother, Robert W. Backus, in 1974.
Memorial services at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 31, in Spring Creek Congregational Church, with Leslie L. Kingsbury of Rock Valley College officiating. The body was cremated. Arrangements by FRED C. OLSON MORTUARY, 1001 2nd Ave. No visitation. Memorials may be made in her name to the Arthritis Foundation or Rockford Literacy Inc.
