John Patrick Riley III is the son of John Patrick Riley and Fern Virginia Means. He was born in San Saba County in 1943. The Riley Heirship Affidavit of 1987 simply states that John Patrick Riley, Junior (actually should be John Patrick Riley III) died as a child. However records of his death in 1974 were found; he died on 20 August 1974 in Los Angeles, California. He is buried in the San Fernando Cemetery #2 in San Antonio, Texas. It should be noted that the marker says that he is John Patrick Riley III; his birth record says that he is John Patrick Riley, Jr. It is felt that the names for the father (1884), son (1916) and grandson (1943) should have been John Patrick Riley Sr., Jr., and III although most of the records do not indicate that; however, it was probably the intent as shown by this grave marker.

His mother married someone named Granata and there are several Granata family members buried in the same cemetery where John Patrick Jr. is buried. It is not known how he wound up in California at the time of his death, but apparently his mother brought him back to Texas to be buried in San Antonio. John Patrick and Fern had lived in San Antonio when they were married, and it is thought that Fern lived there for awhile after their divorce and after she married someone named Granata.
