Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the Civil War as a Sergeant in Company D, 61st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery at Fisher's Hill, Virginia on September 22, 1864. His citation reads "Was on the skirmish line which drove the enemy from the first entrenchment and was the first man to enter the breastworks, capturing one of the guns and turning it upon the enemy." His Medal of Honor was awarded to him on February 16, 1897. He was one of eight 61st Pennsylvania Infantry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being 1st Lieutenant Charles H. Clausen, Corporal Joseph Fisher, Corporal John C. Matthews, Private Milton Matthews, Captain George W. Mindil, Private Theodore Mitchell, and Major Robert L. Orr).
