John and Agnes Irwin were early settlers to Pittsburgh. Their Erin Hill Estate one mile east of the "Point" was home to many Irwin, Mahon and Rose descendants. When son and widower William Wallace Irwin married Sarah Isabella Bache and went to Washington, D.C. as U.S. Congressman and then Copenhagen, Denmark as Charge d'Affaires he left his three children Charlotte, John and Frances from his first marriage in the care of grandmother Agnes.
