Arthur James Hoel (1924 - 2011)

Arthur James Hoel, a loving father, grandfather, brother and uncle, died peacefully Friday morning, April 15, 2011, during his 86th year. Service: Noon Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 3621 Tulsa Way, with the Rev. Erik Gronberg and the Rev. Kendra Mohn, pastors of the church, and Dr. Laurence D. Furr, organist and choir director, officiating. Following a committal service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Art will be laid to rest in Greenwood Memorial Park next to his wife, Freida, who died in 1997. Visitation: He will lie in state on Tuesday at Robertson Mueller Harper where family and friends will gather to share laughter and tears from 5 to 7 p.m. His family will host a reception and luncheon in the church's Fellowship Hall immediately after the service. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to Trinity Lutheran Church or to a charity of one's choice, in his memory, is suggested.

Born Dec. 11, 1924, on a farm near Cranfills Gap in Bosque County, Art was the youngest of four children born to Charlie Palmer and Agnes Hoff Hoel. He went to school at Norse, a Norwegian settlement near Clifton. While young, he worked hard on the farm picking cotton and helping out. After graduating from Clifton High School, he went to Clifton Junior College before moving to Fort Worth to attend TCU. Art loved to draw and became an illustrator at Convair, which later became General Dynamics, now Lockheed Martin. He retired from there after 40 years. He met his wife, Freida Jo Davis, while working at Convair; they were married on Nov. 5, 1955, at First Baptist Church in Weatherford. Art and Freida had two children, Mark Edward and Laurie Kay; the family lived in the Wedgwood area of Fort Worth for over 30 years. Art joined Trinity Lutheran Church in the '50s and was very involved in church activities. He was a member of the Troll Hjem Chapter of the Norwegian Society of Texas. He designed and built an "earth-sheltered house" in Pecan Plantation in the late '80s as a retirement home. Art and Freida enjoyed several years of traveling through Europe and Alaska. He loved the outdoors, including boating and landscaping, and always had projects going. Art was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Freida; son, Mark, who died in 2005; and brothers, Charles and Harlan.

Survivors: In addition to his daughter, Laurie Hoel Jaecks and Barry, Art is survived by his daughter-in-law, Trudi Hoel of The Woodands; grandchildren, Brandon Hoel and Julia, Christine and Natalie Jaecks; sister, Vernelle Hoel Conner of Denver, Colo.; and nieces, nephews and cousins and their families.
