Howard married Almeda Minnie Osgood on December 24, 1925 in Newport, VT. He met Almeda out on Lake Memphramagog -- she was in rowboat with friends, something happened & she told them she would get in the next boat that came along, along came Howard & she climbed in with him. They had two sons -- Howard Clyde Jr. and Edward James.
Howard loved to play baseball and was an excellent pitcher - his son Ed never saw him pitch, but he passed his love of baseball on to his older son, Howard. Almeda told this story: Howard was in the town league and one day after he had pitched a game he was approached by a man who asked him if he wanted to go to college, all-expenses-paid, and play baseball. He told him no, he'd just gotten married & didn't think he could.
Howard liked to go hunting - bird hunting (partridges), rabbit, deer -- and liked to fish the brooks for trout. He and his buddy used to go fishing "down the lake" into Canada - you were supposed to check in with customs- one day they didn't check in when they returned. Somehow the customs officer found out it was him and he was fined. He also like to go ice fishing until his buddy went through the ice and was killed. He never ice fished again.
Howard suffered a stroke in December 1970 and died on January 9, 1971 at North Country Hospital in Newport, VT, following a second stroke. He is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Newport, VT.
