Three different sources give three different sets of dates for Alfred's birth and death. His tombstone carries the dates Jan 26, 1825 - Mar 2, 1861; his brother Gasua's Bible has the dates Jan 25, 1823 - Mar 27, 1861, and his own Bible has the dates above. His personal Bible record has been selected as the primary source. Also, while most of the family spelled the surname "Fortenberry," Alfred spelled the name "Fortinberry," and it is thus spelled in his Bible and on his gravestone.

Alfred was the son of Mississippi pioneers William Fortenberry and Violett Kennington. He was married in Marion Co., Mississippi on 24 February 1848 to Adarine M. L. Faulk, the daughter of Jesse Faulk and Lucy Nance. Alfred died at a fairly young age, and following his death his widow married Charles B. Davis as his second wife.

Alfred and Adarine had eight children:

*Nelson Monroe, b. 21 April 1849, m. Philona R. Ball
*William Jesse, b. 2 Oct 1850, m. Ann Elizabeth Regan
*Thomas Benton, b. 18 February 1852, m. Gabriella Sanders
*Richard Alexander, b. 24 October 1853, m. Emily F. Ellzey and later Josephine Ellzey
*Susan Penelope, b. 3 June 1855, m. James R. Davis
*Alfred Gasua (Gazzie), b. 8 Jul 1857, m. Tular A. Bilbo
*Calvin Newton, b. 24 February 1859, m. Angeline E. Holmes
*Euseba Adarine Mary, b. 1 February 1861, m. William J Regan.
