Sheri Anderson provided the following information:

William Pettigrew Sr.'s last name was originally Adkins. He is listed on the 1900 Federal Census in Gladesville, Wise County, Virginia with his parents (Landon Cole Adkins and Eliza Jane Tompkins Adkins) as well as 3 of his 4 sisters (Sarah Ellen Adkins, Ida Blanche Adkins and Gemima "Mima" Helen Adkins). His oldest sister Mary Myrtle had already married and moved out by this time.

Between 1905 and 1910, His parents divorced and his mother remarried a Mr. Wm. Thomas Pettigrew. It is during this time that Wm. Thomas adopted William and his younger sister Gemima, therefore giving them his last name. They are found in the 1910 Federal Census living in Marsh Fork, Raleigh County, West Virginia. William and Gemima's older siblings had already left the home by that time. His stepfather passed away by 1920.

His mother remarried again to a Mr. Robert Workman. She died May 13 1940 and is buried (near Colcord, WV) in Lawson Cemetery, Boone County, WV.

His biological father (Landon Adkins)was purported to be a Baptist minister. He remarried also in Dec 1911 in Red Ash, VA to a Ms. Mary Wess. We believe Landon is buried around the Red Ash, VA area.

In a twist of last names, Landon's last name of "Adkins" was not his real last name either. His real last name was Alfred / Alford. Landon and his younger brother Sidney took the last name of the family who raised them (their step aunt and uncle Henry and Sarah "Sally" Bowman Adkins). Their mother was young and unwed and the younger step sister of Sarah "Sally" Bowman Adkins. She was their house servant.
