John Windsor was born in Webster County, Georgia, one of 13 children.. At 17 he enlisted as a private in Company F, Third Georgia Reserves and served four years in the Civil War, first as a drummer boy and finally as an officer. Several years after the war he moved to Americus, GA to accept a job with Harrold, Johnson and Company, one of the leading cotton concerns of the area. Next he managed the extensive holdings of Dr. W. W. Barlow, one of the wealthiest men in South Georgia. Mr. Windsor was associated with some of the businesses centering around the Savannah, Americus and Montgomery Railroad when it was being extended across Sumter, Webster and Steward counties in Georgia. This led to his service as president of the People's National Bank. The historic Windsor Hotel, a mainstay in the town of Americus, GA was named for him. On April 24, 1879 John Windsor married Miss Emily Lester of Americus. To them were born Harriett, Carolyn and Lester.
