John W Bowers was born on June 26, 1792, in Washington (later Greene) County, PA, the child of John W. Bowers Sr and Barbara Livingood. Between 1810-1813, the family moved to just outside of Zanesville, Muskingum County, PA. There he married Mary Vernon in 1814. Together they had five children before Mary died in 1823; Sarah Bowers Joseph, Rebecca Bowers Downs, Nicholas L. and Allen Vernon Bowers, and Mary Bowers Whitcraft.

John Jr then married Rebecca Vernon, Mary's younger sister, on March 30, 1824 in Zanesville, Ohio. They had twelve known children together. This can be somewhat verified by the obit of Rebecca Bowers Downs, which states that 13 of 17 siblings are still living.

John and Rebecca moved to Henry County Iowa in the 1850's. They can be found there in 1856 with eight of their younger children. John died on May 24, 1882, in Henry County, Iowa, having lived a long life of almost 90 years, and was buried at Ebenezer Cemetery along with Rebecca.
