Intestinal Influenza Fatal To Dr. Joe L. Allen, 68, In Louisville Tuesday.
Dr. Joe L. Allen, who had practiced his profession at Loretto for nearly two years, died at 8:30 o'clock Tuesday night at St. Joseph Infirmary in Louisville where he had been under treatment for intestinal influenza for a week. Becoming ill about three weeks ago, he went to Louisville to consult a physician and when his condition became serious he was removed from the home of a daughter to infirmary where he gradually grew worse until the end came.
Dr. Allen, a native of Meade County, was born at Wolf Creek sixty-eight years ago. He was educated in schools there and, after graduation from the Louisville Medical College, practiced in Louisville for sixteen years before coming to Loretto in November, 1939. Since locating there he had made friends of all his acquaintances. He was a man of high ideals and was kind and considerate in his practice, answering all calls whether from the rich or poor. He was a devout member of the St. Francis.
Surviving Dr. Allen are his widow, who is Miss Tillie Mattingly of Concordia; two daughters, Mrs. J. E. Friedhoff and Mrs. Jack Avary of Louisville; three sons, Mr. Edward Allen Columbia, Mo.; Louis Allen, who is in the U.S. Army camp in Texas, and Leon Allen of Loretto; four sisters, Mrs. Cora Lee Stewart, Mrs. Jessie Wilson and Mrs. Emma Belle Geyer, all of Louisville, and Mrs. Ida Adams of Davenport, Iowa: two brothers, James B. Allen of Mamoth,Ill., Lawrence Allen of Louisville, and four grandchildren.
The body was removed to the Carl Herbold Funeral Home in Louisville and funeral services were conducted at St. Benedict's Church in that city at 9 o'clock yesterday morning by the Rev. J. J. Fitzgibbon. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.
