Long Time Resident of Edina and Near Here, 86, Died Friday at Home--Funeral Here Monday.

F. A. Shaeffer, Sr., a resident of Knox County for fifty-eight years, died at 6:30 o'clock Friday morning at his home in the northeast part of Edina. He was 86 years old.
The body was taken to the Kriegshauser Funeral Home and services were held at 9 o'clock Monday morning at St. Joseph Church. Burial was in the New Catholic Cemetery here. The Rev. Terence Mullins, pastor of St. Joseph Church, was in charge. Mr. Shaeffer was a member of the St. Joseph Society.
Francis A. Shaeffer was the oldest of twelve children of Israel and Louise Arnold Shaeffer. He was born Sept. 15, 1863 [sic] in Gettysburg, Pa., less than three months after the Battle of Gettysburg. He attended school there and when he was a young man he lived in Chicago for a time then in 1888 went to Kansas City, where he lived for four years.
On Dec. 26, 1888, he was married to Annie Mulville, daughter of Michael and Bridget Mulville, early residents of Knox County. They were married by the late Archbishop John J. Glennon at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Kansas City. In 1892 they moved to the onetime John Foy farm four miles southeast of Edina. Later they moved to the former Wash Hudson farm a mile southeast of Edina, which was the family home until 1919. Mrs. Shaeffer died on Oct. 21, 1912.
On Feb. 11, 1920, Mr. Shaeffer was married to Josephine McCauley at St. Peter Church in Quincy, Ill., by the late Rev. J. J. Driscoll. Mr. Shaeffer, who was a carpenter and contractor, worked in Quincy for a time. In 1922 he and Mrs. Shaeffer moved to what was known as the John Cain property in the northeast part of Edina. Mrs. Shaeffer died on Aug. 5, 1948.
Mr. Shaeffer and his first wife had eight children, six of whom survive. They are F. A. Shaeffer, Jr., of Wichita, Kan.; J. H. Shaeffer of Scottsbluff, Nebr.; W. D. Shaeffer of Fairbanks, Alaska; E. T. Shaeffer of Pittsbugh, Pa.; Marguerite, Mrs. A. E. McCoy, of Monroe City, and Louise, Mrs. Charles McClanahan, of Kansas City. Mr. Saheffer also leaves ten grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and six great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by all of his brothers and sisters and two daughters, Elizabeth, who died in infancy, and Miss Mary A. Shaeffer, who died on Feb. 11, 1935.
The pallbearers were three of his sons, F. A., Jr., W. D. and E. T. Shaeffer, a grandson, W. T. McCoy; a son-in-law, Charles McClanahan; a grandson-in-law, Dr. John P. Graham of Pittsburgh, Pa., and a nephew, Francis McCauley, of Chicago.
Others from our of town who were here for the funeral were: Mrs. F. A. Shaeffer, Jr., Wichita, Kan., Mrs. E. T. Shaeffer and daughter, Helen, of Pittsburgh, Pa., Mrs. John P. Graham and daughter, Anna Louise, of Butler, Pa., Mrs. G. J. Buck of Ames, Iowa. J. H. Shaeffer was here a short time ago but was unable to be her for the funeral.
