Hepsie Vernal Frank of Rough and Ready, Ca., passed away at a local medical facility on March 9. Hepsie was 88. Per her wishes no services were held.

Born on June 1, 1922, to Samuel and Nellie Fraley in Caseyville, Ky.After being raised in Kentucky until she was 14, Hepsie and her family moved to Bakersfield, Calif.
Her younger days were spent in Bakersfield, where she met her first husband, Richard Hooker. Also while in Bakersfield, Hepsie was part of the Ground Observer Corps during the late 1950s looking for suspicious aircraft during the start of the Cold War.

Eventually, Hepsie divorced and met and married William (Bill) Frank of Rough and Ready. Bill was well known as a local logging truck owner/operator for many decades.
They shared a home on the family-owned ranch in Rough and Ready, where they raised cattle.

Hepsie worked many years in different retail stores in Grass Valley, and also worked nearly 15 years at the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital kitchen. Later in years, she could be found riding the Gold Country Stage with her friends to go shopping. She loved all that crossed her path. She loved wearing her many different hats, her bible, and her cats.

Hepsie was preceded in death by Bill Frank in 1988, and her son Raymond Hooker in 2010.

She is survived by her children, Richard Hooker, Janith Withers, Johnny Hooker and Shirley Smith, all from the Tennessee, Kentucky and Arizona areas. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her nephew, John Trauner and family, who live on the family ranch in Rough and Ready.
