Former Flanagan Farmer Dies in Streator Hospital Following Short Illness


John L. Jenkins, 57, of 1101 North Park Street, and formerly residing north of Flanagan, died at St. Mary's Hospital in Streator, at 6:30 Friday morning following an illness of one week's duration. He was admitted to the hospital on Thursday.


The son of Mr. and Mrs. Albanus L. Jenkins, he was born September 23, 1886, in Long Point Township, where he spent the greater part of his life. About five years ago Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins moved to Streator. They were members of the Flanagan Christian Church before moving to Streator.


He is survived by his wife, formerly Margaret Louden, to whom he was married September 15, 1909, and four children:

Harold of Rock Island, IL

Lester of Streator, IL

Marjorie E. Grant of Ancona, IL

PFC Ervin Jenkins of San Diego, CA, who recently spent a furlough with his parents after seeing action in the South Pacific

two brothers: Allen Jenkins of Long Point and Jesse Jenkins of Peoria

three sisters: Mary Anderson, Emma Hayren* and Nelle Rapp* all of Paton, Iowa




Funeral services were held at Streator Christian Church at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon with Rev. Leland Tyrrell officiating. Rev. W. D. Patersen, pastor of Flanagan Christian Church, and E. T. Litchfield sang "The Old Rugged Cross", "Home of the Soul" and "Oh, Love That Will Not Let Me Go" with Mrs. John Linneman as accompanist.


Pallbearers were Clifford Park, William Grau, Clifford Saxton, Clarence Jensen and H. L. Herold, all of Flanagan, and Curtiss Grant of Long Point. Interment was in Long Point Cemetery.

He was the brother of George Avery, Mary Elizabeth, Lydia Ann, Charles Howard, Jesse Herbert, Emma Eliza, and Nellie Mae.


On September 15, 1909, he married Margaret Louden (daughter of David and Margaret Orr Louden) who was born on Dec. 6, 1886.


He was the father of Harold Logan, Lester Vernon, Marjorie Elizabeth and Lyle Ervin.
