Robert was the eldest child of seven born to William C. Mason (1838-aft.1885) and Mary Deselms (1837-bef. March 1885) of Guernsey County, Ohio. The Mason family moved to Kansas about 1879, settling first in Bourbon County, near Mary's sister Prudence and husband David Britton's family (see 1880 U.S. Census). Soon thereafter, William Mason moved his family to Cowley County, following Mary's sister Elizabeth and her husband Joseph Mackey. Mother Mary died before the 1885 Kansas Census, taken in March. William is shown as a widower. No further record has been found for either parent; their burial locations are not known.
