Born in Jeffersonville, Clinton Co. Ind.

Hiram was 6 years old when his father, James Sherard, Jr, (a war of 1812 veteran) moved from Indiana to the frontier land of Missouri. They arrived, according to family tradition, on Christmas day, 1840, settling in Grant Township, DeKalb County. James died in a war with indians on December 5th, 1843.

Married Susan Perry on Dec 21, 1851, they had 11 children. Susan died Nov 17, 1883 in Lamoni, IA.

After Susan's death, Hiram married Martha Jane Asher Nickerson on Feb 12, 1885.
There were no children from this union.

After Martha Jane died he married Mary J Henry of DeKalb County Missouri. Mary was a single young lady, 26yo at the time and Hiram was 64. One child was born of this union, Susan Sherard.

During the Civil War, Hiram was mustered into the service of the Union Army on Aug 22,1862 as a "4th Sergeant", CO. K, 39th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Under the command of General William Tecumseh Sherman, Hiram fought in the battle of Alatoona Pass in Georgia. During that battle Hiram was captured by the Confederate Army (under the command of General John Bell Hood). He escaped about two months later and spent the rest of his time in the army in the vicinity of Washington DC.
Mustered out of service on June 5, 1865.
