Sterling Standard (Weekly), Second Part, 13:1, March 31, 1898: A Horrible Accident
Subtitle: "Roy Eitman [sic] Run Over by a Clover Huller Wednesday.""
Roy, the six-year-old soon of Mr. and Mrs. John Eitman, was badly, if not fatally, injured by being run over by a clover huller Wednesday afternoon. He sustained injuries about the head and leg which may prove fatal.
The little fellow had just gotten out of school as Frank Brothers traction engine, with a clover huller and water tank coupled on behind, came down the street. He jumped onto the tongue of the separator. According to the stories told by his playmates, the engine gave him a jerk, throwing him to the ground. Although no one saw him get hurt, it is supposed that the wheel of the machine struck him on the head, throwing him to one side. Engineer Sam Frank immediately stopped the engine and the injured boy ran to the side of the road, the blood streaming from the wound in his head. Mrs. E. Dill, who happened to be near at the time, picked him up and carried him into the house, and immediately summoned Dr. Gregg. As yet the doctor cannot tell whether he is injured internally or not.
No blame can be laid upon Frank Brothers as Mr. Frank had told the children several times to keep away from the machine. The water tank obstructed the view from the engine so that the engineer could not see the boy on the tongue .
