Emma Marie Beier, daughter of German immigrants Mary S. (née Zwing) and John Frederick Theodore Beier, was born in East Bend Township, Champaign County, Illinois, where her family farmed.

Emma "Bier" and Isaac Painter were married on 31 August 1893 in Urbana, Champaign County. The couple farmed in the county's East Bend and Condit Townships, where their first five children were born. In 1913, they relocated to Gratiot County, Michigan, where their sixth child was born.

"Mr. Beier was married in 1868 [sic; 1866], to Miss Mary S. Swain, a native of Bavaria, and the five children born to them are Laura, Ida [Henrietta], Amelia [Emma Marie], George and Mary [Maria]."
