Olaf Johnson (Olof Jonsson) was a son of Jons Hansson and Sissa Jonsdotter. He was born in Sweden and immigrated to the U.S. as a young man. He married Nellie Person (Nilla Pehrsdotter) in 1884 in Wahoo, Nebraska, the first couple married at the Swedish Lutheran Church there.

Olaf was a carpenter and wood worker. After living in the Wahoo area for some time, the family moved to Boyd County, Nebraska, where he tried his hand at hog ranching. They finally moved to South Dakota. He and Nellie raised a family of eight children, all born in Wahoo, Nebraska:

Oscar L. Johnson, married Olga Sandberg.

Esther Elvira Johnson, married Butryx A. Olson.

Tekla S. Johnson, married Robert L. Edstrom.

Harry E. Johnson, married Clarice M. Kerbel.

Ruby L. Johnson, married Ralph S. Lewis.

Ruth Naomi Johnson, married Edwin G. Anderson.

Paul M. Johnson, married Irene McEachran.

In his last years, Olaf began to experience dementia, was institutionalized in Yankton, South Dakota, and died there after only a few weeks. His body was brought to Wahoo for burial.
