Olaf was a carpenter and wood worker. After living in the Wahoo area for some time, the family moved to Boyd County, Nebraska, where he tried his hand at hog ranching. They finally moved to South Dakota. He and Nellie raised a family of eight children, all born in Wahoo, Nebraska:

Paul M. Johnson, married Irene McEachran.
In his last years, Olaf began to experience dementia, was institutionalized in Yankton, South Dakota, and died there after only a few weeks. His body was brought to Wahoo for burial.
