Katherine was the second of eight children born to John Taphorn and Sophia Von Bokern. On 25 Oct 1904 she married Frederick Schoenbaechler and they had one son, Frederick. Her husband died of tuberculosis in 1919 and eleven years later, in 1930, the same disease claimed the life of her son. For many years she supported herself by cleaning railroad cars for the L&N Railroad. Katherine died of a pulmonary infarction at General Hospital at the age of 80.
