Louisa Jane Massey was the youngest child of Samuel Vardry and Jane Duncan Massey. She married Arthur Leroy Hunter at the home of her brother-in-law, Stephen Hunter, on February 23, 1902. The family moved from South Carolina to Missouri where Arthur farmed for a Mr. Hall, then moved to Florida for a short time before returning to South Carolina. The family headed to Washington around 1919 to join other family members who were already living in the Seattle area.

It was as an adult that Jane changed her name and started using "Jean." Jean was baptized at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Walhalla, South Carolina, on May 21, 1882, by Rev. William McWhorter, and joined the church as an adult on September 25, 1895.
