From the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Friday, April 9, 1915, p. 14:

First Poly Mayor Dead; Funeral to Be Held Saturday

J. R. Thomas, 77, first mayor of Polytechnic, pioneer Texan and Civil war veteran, died at 3 a.m. Friday at his home, 3328 Avenue H, Polytechnic.

Thomas had lived in Polytechnic eight years, coming from Weatherford. He had practically retired from business, but dealt in real estate in recent years.

Born in Tennessee in 1838, Thomas came to Texas more than fifty years ago. He served in a Texas regiment during the war. Prior to going to Weatherford he was a resident of Comanche.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday from the residence. He was a well known Mason.

He is survived by a wife and seven children, who are L. L. Thomas of El Campo, Eugene Thomas, Fort Worth; Mrs. A. W. McNiel, Nashville, Tenn.; Miss Clyde Thomas and Will Thomas of Dallas; Mrs. John Switzer of Tolbert, Mrs. W. M. Hawkins of Forest and two sisters.
