Rena Mulder was born on December 7, 1904 in Holland, to Derk J "Dick" Mulder and Jantje "Jennie" Moerke. The family emigrated to the United States when Rena was a toddler, in 1907, settling in Rock County, Minnesota.

Rena married George A Hering on November 18, 1925 in Worthington, Minnesota. The couple moved to Sioux Falls from Ellsworth, Minnesota in 1929.

Rena was a member of Pythian Sisters and the First Christian Church. She was predeceased by her husband on April 5, 1982.

Survivors include one son, a daughter, six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two sisters.
