Lewis, the fourth of nine children of Joel Moulton and Sarah Hatch was born in 1820 at Sanford, Maine.

Lewis married Mehitable Hill Jones (1830-1925), the daughter of Thatcher and Louisa (Raymond) Jones on 24 August 1852 at Sanford, Maine.[1] They had twelve children born at Maine: Albert T., Olive, Winslow L., Ada Ann, Emma Ophelia, Martha Jane, Orren Anderson, Lillian A., James A. Minnie Bell, Abial Hall, and Sarah F. Moulton.

Lewis F. Moulton died on 20 March 1885 in his 65th year at Sanford, and is buried in Oakdale Cemetery at Sanford, York, Maine[2]
