Earl L. Bretton, son of Jerry and Nellie Bretton, was born March 28, 1902, at Speed, Kans., and died Dec. 24, 1974 at the age of 72 years, 9 months, 24 days.
He moved to Gove County in 1907 with his parents where they settled on a farm west of Gove.
He was united in marriage to Hazel Hannaford on Jan. 21, 1926. Three children were born to this union: Beula, Earlene, and Earl Jr.
He was engaged in farming in Gove county all but ten years which was spent in Colorado. He moved back to Gove in 1945 where he operated a cafe, was janitor of the high school, and worked on the County Road department. He was fully retired in 1964.
Mr. Bretton was preceded in death by his mother and father; a daughter-in-law, Clara, a son-in-law, Russell Steerman, a greatgrandson, Stephen, two sisters and one brother.
Suvivors are his wife, Hazel; a daughter, Beula and her husband, Max Wilson; a daughter, Earlene Steerman, both of Gove; and a son, Earl, and his wife, Aletha, Garden City; nine grandchildren: Velva and husband, Phil Gann; Pam Weber; Barbara and husband, Jerry Werner; Debbie and husband, Mike Gassmann; Robert and David Steerman; Richard and Raymond Bretton; and Billy Morse. Also five great grandchildren, Michelle and Marsha Maurath; Denita and Rodney Weber; and Jerry Jay Werner, Jr.; four sisters, Mrs. B.W. (Hattie) Litton, Mrs. Lain (Pearl) Cleveland, Gove; Mrs. Velma Thomas, Shallow Water; Mrs. Ruby Hannaford, Atwood Care Home; one brother, Jerry, Grinnell; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were at the United Methodist church, Gove, on Dec. 27 with burial in the Gove cemetery.
