Stephen Mackey "Steve" Burleson was born December 3, 1877 in Buda Hays County, Texas to David Crockett Burleson and Louisa "Lou" Weir. He stood 5ft 10 in tall, had blue eyes, brown hair and a ruddy complexion. He was not married. Steve was a ranchman in Jim Hogg County, Texas. In 1910, Steve was the editor of a local paper in Hays County, Texas. He enlisted in the Texas Rangers as a REGULAR RANGER on May 26, 1916 thru November 30, 1916, as a private in Company D. He then resigned and continued ranching. He again enlisted as a REGULAR RANGER January 1, 1917, to January 28, 1917, as a private in Co. A. He was then fired from the Rangers. In 1920, he was a peace officer in Cisco, Eastland County, Texas. Steve's father, Ranger David Crockett Burleson. served under Captain James Hughes Callahan in 1855. Stephen Mackey Burleson died April 25, 1924, in Stevens County, Texas He is buried in Live Oak Cemetery, Manchaca, Travis County, Texas.
