US Congresswoman, US Diplomat. Born in Jacksonville, Illinois, she was the daughter of US Congressman William Jennings Bryan and the first woman representative in the United States Congress. Educated at the University of Nebraska, she was a member of the executive committee of the American Women's War Relief Fund in London, England and a war nurse in the Voluntary Aid Detachment in the Egypt-Palestine campaign, (1915-18). She was a lecturer on the Lyceum and Chautauqua lecture circuit, Miami, Florida, (1918-28) and on the board of regents of the University of Miami, (1925-28). In 1929, she was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-first Congress and to the next succeeding Congress, serving until 1932. An unsuccessful candidate for renomination, she was appointed Ambassador to Denmark, serving (1933-36). In 1949, she was a delegate to the United Nations General Assembly and was a member of the Advisory Board of the Federal Reformatory for Women from 1938 until death at age 68. She died in Copenhagen, Denmark.
