Marshall was the youngest of eleven children born to Kerney Baskem and Bessie Mae (Harmon) Butler. He married Ernestine Mansfield in 1948 and they had one daughter: Linda Gail.

BURLINGTON - Mr. Marshall Dean Butler, 70, of 2019 S. Mebane St., E died 1:45 p.m. Sunday, July 18, 1999, at Jefferson Family Care Home, Yanceyville.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rich & Thompson Chapel, with the Rev. Phillip Myers, First Reformed United Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
Born in Guilford Co., son of the late Kerney Baskem Butler and Bessie Mae Harmon Butler and husband of Mrs. Ernestine M. Butler. He was a member of Bethany Methodist Church in Liberty.
Survivors are wife, Mrs. Ernestine M. Butler of the home; daughter, Mrs. Linda Butler Johnston of Burlington; sisters, Mrs. Mozelle B. Franklin and Mrs. Helen B. Franklin, both of Goldsboro; brother, Mr. Dewey Butler of Burlington; one granddaughter, Miss Lisa Gail Johnston of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Miss Mary Alice Butler and Mrs. Grace Butler Hooper; brothers, Mr. Troy Butler, Mr. J.C. Butler and Mr. Farris Butler.
The family will be at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6-8 p.m. Monday evening and other times at the residence of the daughter, Linda B. Johnston, 916 Brentwood Dr., Burlington, NC 27215.
