Attended Knox College 1859-61; Civil War Vet served with 33d Illinois Infantry Regiment and then as a Lieutenant with the 74th USCT Regiment. In 1864 when his father sold the farm land and moved West, Frederick was still in the Army and when he was discharged, he stayed in Galesburg. Frederick's father gave each of his sons 640 acres of land when they married. Frederick was not provided with his land since he did not get married until after the War.
