John G. McKinnon is believed to have a brother Charles McKinnon of Wake County, NC, as well as a brother Lewis McKinnon. According to documentation from Katherine Satterwhite West, John Garrett McKinnon Sr. served in the War of 1812, he was drafted in Washington County, GA, as a Substitute Soldier in a company commanded by Captain James Willis, regiment of GA Militia commanded by Colonel Joseph Chambers for 6 months and was honorably discharged at Camp Pinkney, GA, on April 12, 1813. (Muster card in National Archives #3782036, 37827104, 37827171, 38727233, 38727294).
They were in Hancock County, GA, by 1814.
