Hilda Marie Westra, age 82, of Santa Rosa, California, formerly of Sebeka, Minnesota, passed away in Sebastopol, California, on January 16, 1997.
Hilda was born in Sebeka on October 5, 1914. Her proud parents were Frank & Eliza Frisbie. She lost her mother at the age of 14, and was then raised by her grandmother in Iowa. She married Paul Westra on March 14, 1934, and they had four daughters, Betty, Sharon, Pat and Nina. Paul and Hilda were married for 37 years when Paul was taken from her. During their marriage they lived in numerous cities, due to Paul's career in sales.
After Paul's death in 1972, Hilda moved to Santa Rosa, California, to be near Nina. She lived in Santa Rosa for 14 years and then moved to Morton, Washington, to be near Pat. After a year and a half, she moved to Reno, Nevada to be near Sharon. The last four years of her life, she resided in Santa Rosa.
Hilda was a very quiet and shy person. She was a homemaker. Had her own coffee shop for a while in Wadena and in later years, helped Paul in the offices of Mobile Home Sales Lots.
Though she only had an eighth grade education, she was quite intelligent, because she was an avid reader. At one time, she read a whole set of Encyclopedias – cover to cover. Her interests were crocheting and reading.
Three days before her 80th birthday, she was informed that she had breast cancer. By the time the cancer was discovered, it had metastasized in her bones. She then had intensive radiation and hormone therapy for several months. Happily the cancer went into remission for over a year. Throughout her illness, she maintained a glowing patience and strength.
She was a most thoughtful person. Her concern that her family not be burdened by her or her illness was astonishing! She was sweet, lovable and gracious to the end.
She is survived by four daughters, Betty Harne, Sharon and Bob Rust, Pat and Norm Buck, and Nina and Mike Fall; one sister, Ruth Downer of Menahga; eleven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Paul W. Westra.
Memorial services were held on Sunday, January 19, 1997, at the Daniels Chapel Of The Roses in Santa Rosa, California.
