Harry Benjamin Sedwick Jr., 89, of Orange, Va., passed away at his home April 5, 2011.

He was born Feb. 9, 1922, in Orange County, the son of Harry Benjamin Sedwick Sr. and Clyde Crigler Sedwick. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Hazel Utz Sedwick.

He is survived by his three sons, Benny Sedwick and fiance, Cathy Link, Steve Sedwick and his wife, Janet, and Rod Sedwick and his wife, Gina; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Yager and her husband, Joe; and one brother, Lewis Franklin Sedwick and his wife, Anne, all of Orange; eight grandchildren, Lesli Sheusi and her husband, Vince, Ben Sedwick and his wife, Sunshine, Richard Sedwick and his wife, Allison, Jamie Sedwick Hayes, Stevan A. Sedwick, Jacqueline Sedwick, Ryan Sedwick and his wife, Erin, and Shannon Sedwick; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mrs. Gertrude Buettel of Maryland; former daughter-in-law, Carolyn F. Sedwick; and many nieces and nephews.

H.B. was probably best known for his construction company and his building supply business that he started in Orange in the 1950s, but prior to that, he graduated from Roanoke Business College and enlisted in the Army but soon transferred to the Army Air Corps and became a navigator on a B-24 stationed in England during World War II.

He returned to Orange to start a restaurant business with Les Bartley in the old Silk Mill and married his wife, Hazel Shirley Utz Sedwick.

In the 1950s, he and his wife, Hazel, started a construction business. He became well known in the business world in Orange, Culpeper, Madison and Charlottesville, where he built over 350 private homes and numerous schools and commercial buildings in these counties. He was especially proud of building the Orange County Nursing Home.

He was very active in the Orange community that he so loved. He was a charter member and past president of the Orange Lions Club and honored for his 50 years of perfect attendance. He was a member and past president of the Orange Chamber of Commerce. He was a founding member and past president of the Orange Economic Development Committee. He was an active member of the Orange American Legion Post 156, Trinity United Methodist Church, a big supporter of sports at Booster Park and most of all, an avid supporter of the Orange County Rescue Squad.

Everyone who has ever met H.B. Sedwick Jr. could probably tell you a story that would start with "Hey Boy, ... ." and end the story with a phrase that let you know they had made a friend for life. He will be missed by all.

The funeral for Mr. Sedwick will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at Preddy's Funeral Home in Orange with interment in Graham Cemetery. Family night will be at the funeral home on Friday, April 8, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
