Son of Francis "Frank" M Browning Sr. and Nancy Ann Nordyke. Brother to Mr. John Cummings Browning, Sarah Jane Browning, Mr. Benajah N Browning, and Mr. Francis "Frank" M Browning Jr.

James married Martha Ann Farley about 1853 in Sneedville, Hancock County, Tennessee. Together the had 4 children as follows: Caldonia E Browning Vandeventer, Mr. William Francis/Thomas Browning, Rosa Ella "Rosella" Browning, and Henrietta "Retta" Browning Wynn.

In the 1860 census (2 August 1860) James is a farmer and living in Jonesville, Lee County, Virginia with his wife and children.

On 24 September 1861, James enlisted in the Civil War as a 5th Sergeant in Company D, Virginia 21st Infantry Battalion for the Confederate States of America.

On 16 April 1862, James is promoted to First Full Sergeant.

In the 1870 census James is a physician and living in Jonesville, Lee County, Virginia with his wife and children.

In the 1880 census James is a mill operator and living in Jonesville, Lee County, Virginia with his wife and daughter Henrietta. A nephew, William Noel, is also living with him.
