Galen Edgar "Joe" Baer, 89, passed away Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at Providence Place Retirement Home.

He was born May 23, 1921, in Quincy, Pa., the youngest of 12 children to Daniel Henry and Maude Crilly Baer. On March 10, 1951, he married Geraldine V. Burkholder Baer.

Joe attended Quincy High School and graduated in the Class of 1940. He was employed for a short time at Landis Tool Co., then began working for Bill Barnhart's Sign Co. in Waynesboro. In 1948 he started Baer's Sign Service where he was self-taught in many of the different sign manufacturing processes, including neon and hand-lettering. He was actively involved in the business for more than 50 years.

He joined the United States Marine Corps in World War II and was stationed in the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. He was assistant to the adjutant in the USMC's first bomber squadron, VMB413 known as the "Flying Nightmares" for their nighttime bombing raids on Japanese targets. On Nov. 9, 1945, he was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant. He was recalled to active duty for the Korean Conflict but remained stateside and was honorably discharged on Oct. 1, 1952. He was a life member of the Landis-McLeaf Detachment of the Marine Corps League. Joe was very proud to have served his country as a Marine. He remained in touch with his fellow patriots and never missed an opportunity to attend their reunions.

Joe was a member of Solomon's United Church of Christ. He served on several church boards and he helped build their present church building on Swamp Fox Road. He will always be remembered for his willingness to lend a helping hand. Joe was a born traveler and logged thousands of miles in his and Gerry's RV. In 2008 he was able to tour Alaska which fulfilled his dream to visit all 50 states.

He is survived by his son, Tracy; daughter-in-law Elizabeth (Castleman); and two beloved grandsons, Gavin and J. Turner Baer. His last surviving sibling is John Baer of Waynesboro. He was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine "Gerry" Baer (2007).
