A devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, departed this life on Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at 7:05pm in Baton Rouge. He was born March 19, 1920, in Roseland and was a resident of Jackson. He attended Roseland and Amite schools and graduated from McKowen High School, Class of 1939. He was a World War II veteran having served with the US Army Air Forces in India for three years. He retired in 1978 from the US Postal Service and again in 1996 from the state of Louisiana. Visiting was at Charlet Funeral Home, Clinton, from 5pm to 8pm Thursday. Visiting at Jackson United Methodist Chruch from 1pm until religious service at 3pm Friday, conducted by the Rev. Dave Sheehan and Dr. Wayne Barnes. He is survived by the loving wife of 55 years and six months, Mary Louise Williams Bankston; a daughter, Cathy Bankston DeLee and husband Samuel E. DeLee of Ethel; three grandsons, Samuel Micah DeLee of Jackson and fiancée Stephanie Richardson of Zachary, John Dent Bankston and fiancée Cady Bryel of Roseland, and Joshua Dent DeLee of Lafayette; two granddaughters, Randee Kay DeLee Sartin and husband Cal Sartin of Slaughter and Margaret Louise “Meg” DeLee of Baton Rouge; a great-grandson, Caleb Michael Sartin; an adopted daughter, Terrye Hendry Rhame and husband Jerry Rhame of LaPorte, Texas; granddaughters, Deanna Rhame and Debbie Rhame Moye and husband Tommy Moye; a grandson, Jimmy Rhame; two great-grandsons, Robert LeBlanc and Ryan Moye, all of LaPorte; a dear niece, Kay Mignon Bankston Kolb and husband Frank Kolb; great-nephews, Eric, Kyle and Ivan Kolb all of Birmingham, AL; a sister-in-law, Lora A. Bankston; a devoted cousin, Elaine Hendry Parker and husband John and family of Denham Springs; and numerous other family and friends. He was preceded in death by a son, Randall Dent Bankston; mother and father Lucy Russell and Odis Hendry Bankston; a brother, Odis Hendry Bankston, Jr; and mother-in-law, Lynell S. Williams. He gave time and energy to family, friends and community. In order to the love of the game and sportsmanship, in 1960 and 1961, he organized the first baseball teams for Jackson children naming them Pints and Half Pints. As a community service, he prepared meals for the Fire Department for a number of years. He was a member of Claire Chenault Basha, 8th Bomb Squadron, 7th Bombardment Group, Jackson Volunteer Fire Department, American Legion Post 158, past master of the St. Albans Masonic Lodge 28, past worthy patron of Order of Eastern Star and member of the administrative board at Jackson United Methodist Church. Pallbearers will be Micah DeLee, Josh DeLee, John Dent Bankston, Cal Sartin, Jerry Rhame, Kyle Kolb, Ivan Kolb and Frank Kolb. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Jackson United Methodist Church, the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or a charity of choice.
