Samuel joined the Collins Expedition to Brazil in Feb., 1878. The mission was to build a railroad through the Brazilian jungle around the falls and rapids of the upper Madeira River and establishing steamboat lines above and below the obstructions. Most signed up for a 6 month period. By the end of September, SC Hartranft and several others traveled by canoe on the Madeira River without adequate provisions and little money to leave camp. They were fortunate to make it out alive. The history of the expedition was recorded in a book called "Recollections of an Ill-Fated Expedition to the Headwaters of the Madeira River in Brazil" by Neville B Craig Published September 9, 1907 by Lippincott. He became a teacher in Watsontown, Pa. and later moved to Groton, SD. and became director of Normal Schools. He moved again to Fullerton, California and became a fruit grower.
