Thomas E. Bevers, 49, former coach and teacher at Heltonville High School and currently Guidance Counselor of Shoals Community Schools, died 1:00 a.m. today, January 18, 1974, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Bevers, an educator for 19 years, had been guidance counselor at Shoals the past four years. He taught in 1956-57 at Springville, and was at Heltonville from 1958 to 1967. He was basketball coach at Heltonville five years, and a teacher and guidance counselor there until 1967.
In 1967/68 he was a guidance counselor at Southeast High School in Bradenton, FL and from 1968-70, he was a rehabilitation officer in Florida. He came to Shoals in 1970.
He first taught at Clearspring in Jackson County. He was a graduate of Clearspring High School and Indiana University, and was a member of the Shoals American Legion Post, Moose Lodge No. 2117 at Talmetto, FL and the Baptist Church of Clearspring. He was also a Navy veteran of World War II. He was also a former coach at the Bedford Boys Club.
He was born May 2, 1924 in Jackson County, the son of Lloyd and Mary Viola Maynard Bevers. He married Betty Jane Jackson, June 11, 1946, and she survives.
Other survivors include one son, Paul E. Bevers, Loogootee; three grandsons and one sister, Mrs. Frank(Eva) Payne of Shoals. Three brothers preceded him in death.
Final rites will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Queen Funeral Home in Shoals with Rev. Richard Kern officiating. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery in Shoals.
